Connectivism and Social Learning in Practice

Dr. Orey explains that the Social Learning Theory is a theory where “context and culture are critical in constructing knowledge and understanding the world around us” (Laureate Education Inc., 2010).  Collaboration and cooperation is a vital part of the Social Learning Theory (Laureate Education Inc., 2010).  “The instructional strategy of cooperative learning focuses on having students interact with each other in groups in ways that enhance their learning” (Pitler, Hubbell, Kuhn & Malenoski, 2007).   The Social Learning Theory and cooperative learning directly correlate. They have the same purpose and goals.  If you use the Social Learning Theory in your classroom then in some way you are using cooperative learning.  Technology can be involved in cooperative learning and The Social Learning Theory.  “Technology can play a vital role in cooperative learning by facilitating group collaboration, providing structure for group tasks, and allowing members of groups to communicate even if they are not working face to face” (Pitler, Hubbell, Kuhn & Malenoski, 2007).

  1. Jasmin,

I too noticed the basic direct correlation between social learning theory and cooperative learning strategies. I completely agree with your statement "If you use the social learning theory in your classroom then in some way you are using cooperative learning". Students learning together is at the heart of both social learning theory and cooperative learning. Great post!

  2. Jasmin,

I think that cooperative learning is a very powerful instructional strategy and that it combines effectively with current technology. The role that technology plays is to allow the learners to collaborate with their peers which greatly enhances their learning. I was wondering the type of software that you might use to help second graders in a cooperative learning class?

    1. Well right now, it takes an entire class to get logged onto the computers! They do learn technology fast though and always impress me with how much they can catch on to computers and what they do. We usually work up to doing PowerPoint presentations and those are often built together in groups or partners. I would definitely like to start doing more collaborative work using the computers!

  3. Hi Jasmin,
I think that the technology factor can certainly help us improve the value of the social collaboration. I was very impressed with the opportunities created by the social networking sites. The opportunity for our students to interact with students around the world and discuss common issues, or those issues that may not directly affect them, is a very exciting prospect. This could also lead to beneficial links between schools.

  4. Jasmin, educators benefit from the use of social learning theory in their classroom. For one, it reduces disrespect as described in Mrs. Smith’s classroom (Kim, 2001). Cooperative learning demonstrates to students that the teacher is not the only knowledgeable other in the classroom (Kim, 2001). Kim (2001) also states that “younger children develop their thinking by interacting with adults”, and this stems from the fact that we are born social beings. Technology does play a vital role in the process. I love the fact that technology facilitates classrooms without borders.

  5. Jasmin,
I completely agree, I think that technology is a great way to use the social learning theory. There are so many resources available that allow students to work together and continue to learn that it would be foolish not to take advantage of these opportunities.
