A Blog in Lower Elementary
I am a grade two, elementary teacher. A blog can be a very useful tool for a classroom. A way that I would like to use a blog in my classroom is mainly as a showcase for their work. Elementary students are very proud of everything that they accomplish in a day and even more proud and excited to show it off. I would like to use my blog as a communication tool between the students, the parents and myself. I would like to share the students' achievements and creations. This would be our opportunity to share our hard work not only with our parents but also our relatives, other citizens of our community and with the world. It would be especially neat for comments and student interaction from other students around the world. This blog would enhance our lessons because the students would have a focus group and someone to impress other than just me. They would know that the work they complete is shown to the world and therefore, they should do there best. I think this would really be a great way to use a blog in a lower elementary classroom.

What great ideas! In many ways, blogging can be like having Open House every night. I think that blogging is exciting for the kids because it creates additional outlets for their work. As a parent, I would love being able to have conversations with my children where we could talk specifically about the work they are doing in school. I have been doing Edmodo with my sixth graders and the results have been great. One of the drawbacks, however, is that some kids have limited or no access to computer/internet after school. But I think we are in a transitional period and it is important to keep pushing the limits of what is possible to increase student engagement.
ReplyDeleteThis sounds like an awesome idea, and like Bob mentioned, it is like having an Open House at all times. I think this is especially great for busy parents who may not have time to contact teachers during the times they are available to know what is going on in their child's classroom. My only concern about this idea is the computer skills necessary to put all the information into the blog. I would assume there would be a lot of uploaded photos, and scanning of pictures to get the students' work posted on the blog. Would this be something parents would have to know how to do, or would you as the teacher do it all yourself?
